Aunt Etsy

If you know me, then you know I have a weakness for unique, handmade kids clothing. And if you know Etsy.com, then you know it is THE place to find some of the cutest, most unique, handmade outfits on the planet. My favorites are the retro print fabrics (think: Lizzy House, Amy Butler, and Alexander Henry), swing dresses and twirly skirts--cute without being frilly, suitable for play, and NOT like anything you would make in high school Home Ec class.

Kris is more than aware of my affinity for such items. So, when this dress arrived in the mail the other day, he took one look and said "Oh! I see we have another gift from Aunt Etsy!" Why yes, yes we do.

"The moon is in the sky."

I have to admit, Bronwynn's first word wasn't that big a deal. A socialite since birth, she was communicating with us so frantically all the time--cooing and waving and pointing and singing unrecognizable tunes--that the day she formed words, actual words, we could barely decipher which of those words was indeed FIRST. They spilled out of her perfect pink lips with all the momentum of an avalanche. We gave the prize to "Dada," but it could have just as easily been "hi" or "uh-oh" or "Ollie" or "Constantinople." (...ok, maybe not Constantinople)

Her first SENTENCE, on the other hand, was clearly weeks in the making, something she had been quietly working on, molding as if from clay, until the exact right moment when she could unveil it in context.

One morning last week, B asked to go for a walk, so we set off down the path toward the neighborhood playground. She said "Mama, hann?" which meant she wanted to hold my hand. So we strolled, hand-in-hand, pausing to admire every flower, rock, and bug we encountered along the way.

An airplane passed overhead, to which she pointed and exclaimed "air-pane!" Then she looked up and said "cloud" and then "moon." (I never saw the moon she was referring to, but far be it from me to correct her.)

She was silent for a few moments and then said tentatively, "Mama, da moon is in da sky." I stopped dead in my tracks and looked at her quizzically.

"The moon is in the sky?" I asked her.

"Da moon is in da sky." she replied, confidently.

Why yes, yes it is.

6 Years

Last month, Ollie turned 6. I didn't want to completely ignore the occasion or overlook Ollie's significance in our lives. I'm not sure a day has passed since we adopted Ollie that we haven't smiled. Dogs have a way of putting your problems into perspective. You can have an absolutely shitty day, and you still smile when you see your dog.

Of course, I'm not sure Ollie has smiled as often since we had Bronwynn. It's true what they say about your dog taking a backseat once you have a baby. But I think he's coping alright. He knows to hang out under her highchair at meal times and gets his fair share of toddler hugs and kisses. He knows that when she's outside, she loves to throw the ball for him, and lately, he ESPECIALLY loves that she knows where his dog food is and enjoys filling up his bowl several times a day. She fills his bowl, then commands: "Ollie, eat!"

He happily complies.

To mark his 6th, Bronwynn and I went to the doggie bakery and picked out this carrot cupcake for him. It smelled so good, I should have gotten a couple more for the humans, too.

Big Sister In Training

Our good friends Jes, Chris, and Austin (or "Austi" as Bronwynn calls him) welcomed their second child this week, and we got a chance to meet the little guy (or, not-so-little guy...he was 10lbs at birth!). Bronwynn was smitten. It's all she can talk about since. "Baby? Nigh-Nigh? Baby? Eat? Austi? Baby? Baby bath? Awwwwww....nice baby."

Window Shopping

One thing that's nice about insomnia is that it's given me time to catch up on my online window shopping. I browse various online stores, add items to my cart, and then delete them all before I go back to sleep. You should see all the amazing stuff I haven't bought!

Like this awesome handmade diaper bag from Queen Bee Creations:

Or, this latex mattress that promises the best night's sleep you've ever experienced:

It doesn't end there. Double strollers. Sunglasses. A new video camera for Kris. Cute summer dresses for B. Christmas gifts for my siblings. (See, I'm pretty generous. I haven't bought stuff for my family too.)

Leave a comment if there's anything you want me to add to my shopping list.
