Ok, so here's the before and after...and a few notes at the end about where everything came from.
BEFORE (this is how the previous owners decorated the room. I wasn't a fan of the putty-colored walls. So glad they took the teen glam posters with them, too...)
AFTER:
Isn't it amazing what painting alone can do for a room?? We think this is a space Miles can enjoy now as well as grow into and customize as he gets older and has his own adventures. I'm still looking for a few finishing touches, like an area rug (suggestions welcome!).
The whole room cost less than $1000--furniture, art, textiles and all. We have a whole house to decorate, and wanted to pace ourselves budget-wise.
RESOURCES:
Wall Color: Gray Timber Wolf by Benjamin Moore
Maps and postcards: These are souvenirs from Kris' and my travel. There's a map of the Pennsylvania mountain bike trail where Kris proposed to me, plus maps and photos of Rocky Mountain National Park, keepsakes from New Zealand, Vietnam, Siberia, and more.
Maps above the rocking chair: These were a going-away gift from our dear friend Jes. She mapped our old house and our new house and framed them for us. A great reminder for Miles of where he was born.
Crib & Dresser: Walmart's BabyMod Park Lane collection (I usually avoid Walmart, but I just couldn't resist the bargain price for this set...just over $500 for both pieces. The crib converts to a toddler bed, which is a bonus. And we can remove the changing table top from the dresser when Miles is older).
Bookshelf: Something Kris acquired in college, reclaimed and repainted white by me.
Hanging Globes: These were part of a (very cool, very large) mobile that we received as a gift. I took it apart so that I could arrange and hang them separately above the crib.
Wooden rocking horse: Handmade for Kris when he was a babe.
Bedding: Custom sewn by a dear friend using Lizzy House's "Red Letter Day" fabric. I used the leftover scraps to make the throw pillows and framed art.

Glad to see that the giraffe has a comfy spot in the crib! As usual, you guys are making this YOUR home - very nice choice in wall color and I love the hanging globes and maps idea - you can never start world traveling too early!

Hi! Just stumbled upon your site (love it btw) as I'm scouring the internet looking for nursery design ideas. We're expecting a boy in July so trying to figure out what look we want to do. And I've seen your crib featured in so many blogs that I'm really curious how it lives up to real life. Now that you're little one is here, what do you think of the crib? Is it holding up? Would you recco to others? Seems to get good reviews but would love your feed back too.

So glad you found us. Congrats on your boy!
I would say the crib has held up really well so far, especially given the price. We moved with it, so it was assembled and reassembled a couple of times. The bolts got a little stripped, and so we replaced those, but the crib itself has remained solid.
We have the matching dresser, which has not held up quite as well. I've had to tighten the bolts several times because it started wobbling, and the bottom fell out of one drawer when I tried to stuff it a little too full :)
